Peace Bridge designs

| Swiss bridge designer Christian Menn's latest curved-deck design for a dramatic Niagara River bridge was unveiled last week by the New Millennium Group, which advocates a cable-stayed signature bridge. Menn earlier created designs for the Peace Bridge Authority, and estimates the cost of this design at $110 million. |
| Christian Menn's two-pylon, cable-stayed replacement bridge was the public favorite in May's non-binding community voting. Menn has since said that if the community wants to replace the Peace Bridge rather than build a companion bridge, he'd like a crack at designing a more dramatic curved version. |
| Three arched towers, the most unique form to make the finalist list, provide roadway portals for a cable-stayed replacement bridge submitted by the Figg Engineering Group. Like the leading Menn design, the bridge would cost more than $200 million. |
| The design most favored by Canadian voters was a rigid-frame arched companion bridge designed by the partnered firms of Modjeski & Masters and Buckland & Taylor. The cost estimate for this Peace Bridge-paralleling span would be about $100 million. |
| Figg Engineering also designed a second companion bridge carried forward for more study, a three-span arch bridge in the $100 million range. Unlike the other companion design, which mirrors the arch-and-truss look of the existing bridge, Figg envisioned three suspension arches. |
A number of design concepts for a new Niagara River bridge were advanced during a long public process, with voting in Buffalo and Fort Erie providing a gauge of public approval. Four concepts were selected for further study and more detailed development, but a jury now will make the final recommendation to bridge and municipal authorities.
