Evans police capture man with grenade -  3/4/2007
Two Evans police officers are lucky to be alive after they chased and arrested a 24-year-old man who had two loaded guns in his car and a grenade in his pocket, authorities said. Police also said they found bomb-making materials in his trailer after his arrest.

Car thief and burglar gets 10 years in prison -  3/3/2007
A Lackawanna man was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison by a judge who told the admitted car thief and house burglar that "society is going to be a lot better off with you away."

Ex-Elma man is victim of homicide in Maryland -  3/3/2007
A former Elma man was shot to death Tuesday by an unknown assailant outside his home in Lexington Park, Md. Kenneth J. Walter, 24, was apparently in his car, outside of his apartment when he was shot in the head, according to the the online newspaper St. Mary's Today. Sheriff's officials in Maryland said Walter was found shortly before 7 a.m., "slumped over, partially out of the car."

A super Wal-Mart for Orchard Park? -  3/2/2007
A local developer is seeking approval for a new Wal-Mart Supercenter on Milestrip Road, near Route 219, in Orchard Park. Gerald Buchheit filed plans late Thursday for a 120,000-square-foot Wal-Mart store - the first proposed for the Town of Orchard Park - on a 20-acre site on the south side of Milestrip Road. The $8 million store would offer traditional Wal-Mart fare plus a full line of grocery items.

Demise of paper greatly exaggerated -  3/2/2007
An old newspaperman, Mark Twain, is credited with coining the phrase that rumors of his demise had been greatly exaggerated. It's a phrase another newspaperman, Southtowns Citizen Publisher Chris Coleman, can appreciate after he woke up Thursday to broadcast reports that his paper had closed.

One killed, one hurt in fiery head-on crash -  3/2/2007
BENNINGTON - An East Aurora man was killed when his vehicle collided head-on with a truck shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday on Route 77, state police reported.

Assessor again calls for revaluation -  3/1/2007
Orchard Park Assessor Milton Bradshaw made the pitch once again Wednesday night: The town needs to update its assessment rolls. "I'm bringing up the topic that nobody likes to discuss, the townwide assessment update," Bradshaw told the Town Board. ". . . You've had three assessors who have worked for the Town of Orchard Park who have acknowledged there were inequities, problems."

New housing agency faces are familiar -  3/1/2007
Forget the plaque in Parkview Towers' community room, where brass nameplates identify commissioners of the Lackawanna Municipal Housing Authority. Considering the changes made since commissioners last met in November, perhaps their names should be written in pencil. Two new faces were at the table this week.

No development on 160-acre park -  3/1/2007
Aurora's largest park, boasting 160 acres, remains undeveloped and unused since the town bought it in 1999. Now, Majors Park, located off Hubbard and Olean roads, no longer has a grandiose wish list or a long-range plan that town leaders have talked up for years after spending $350,000 to acquire it.

Unhappy with the work of a contractor on Town Hall, the Wales Town Board on Tuesday issued a Friday deadline for work to be completed satisfactorily.

Residents blast housing plain in Aurora -  2/27/2007
Many Aurora residents again blasted a proposed 47-unit patio home development off Quaker Road near Knox Farm State Park, and are urging the Town Board to reject the project altogether.

Miss Buffalo hopefuls must apply by Friday -  2/27/2007
Friday is the deadline for young women aged 17 to 23 to enter the Miss Buffalo 2007 competition. Screening auditions will be held next Sunday to select 16 finalists. The pageant, a preliminary to Miss New York State and Miss America, will be held April 22 in Flickinger Performing Arts Center at Nichols School.

Orchard Park driver accused in 6-car crash -  2/27/2007
State Police have identified the Orchard Park man who was charged Sunday after troopers say he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into five cars while driving the wrong way on the Thruway.

Town Board approves purchase of police cars -  2/27/2007
The West Seneca Town Board approved the purchase of seven new police vehicles Monday night, awarding the $131,890 contract to the lone bidder, Delacy Ford of Elma.
