Police patrol at Burgard - 3/3/2007 Buffalo police officers were assigned to Burgard Comprehensive High School on Friday to beef up security both inside and outside the Kensington Avenue school. School district security officers also used metal-detecting wands to check students for weapons, police officials said. |

Meningitis claims life of student at St. Joe's - 3/1/2007 A 14-year-old student at St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute died Tuesday night of a severe bacterial meningitis infection. County health and school officials sought Wednesday to console students who went to school with the freshman and calm fears over the infection, which was caused by the streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. |

20 finalists chosen for News Spelling Bee - 3/1/2007 Twenty students from nine counties will vie for the championship of the 80th annual Buffalo News Spelling Bee. The competition will begin at 1:30 p.m. March 11 in the auditorium of the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society Museum. The finalists were the top scorers among 145 school champions who took a written test in early February. |

UB, JCC join forces on nursing education - 2/24/2007 The University at Buffalo and Jamestown Community College have signed a dual admissions agreement for their nursing programs. Under the agreement, students would apply to the program at JCC and, upon satisfactory completion of their associate degree, could continue their studies at UB to earn their bachelor's degree in nursing. The two schools also are considering similar agreements in other programs. |
